Ten Commandments essays Judge Roy Moores Ten Commandments Case Judge Roy Moore has been trying his luck for quite some time trying to keep his Ten Commandments monument in the judicial building in Montgomery. Many people disagree with him trying to have the monument there, as well as the people who agree with Moore. In the article Ten Commandments Case Puts Evangelicals on Opposite Sides, from the Baptist Press, written by Michael Foust, three evangelical leaders take different sides on the case. As for the article, Roy Moore: A monumental Plot for Power?, from Newsweek, co-written by Eleanor Clift and Frederick Burger, gives stances from leaders from different backgrounds to support their claim. The case has been going on for some time, and as of recently, it was taken out of the judicial building and put into storage awaiting an decision by the U.S. Supreme court. The monument is a symbol of the Christian belief system and is argued to be a major violation of the peoples rights in this country. It all started in Moores courtroom in Gadsen, Alabama. Eleven years ago, Moore hand carved a wooden tablet of the Ten Commandments which he hung in his courtroom. Being a small town judge, it really didnt bring much attention to the subject. It wasnt till later when he decided to run for the chief justice position for which it became a big ordeal. He soon became known as the Ten Commandments judge. In the year 2000, Moore won the election for the position and quickly became the object of many eyes all across the country. There are plenty of people that are disagreeing with what he is trying to do, but a recent poll says that 77% of Alabamians support Moores position that the displaying of the commandments is constitutional. Americans Spend Over 100 Hours a Year Commuting At a nationwide average one-way drive-time of about 25.5 minutes, Americans spend more than 100 hours a year commuting to work, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Yes, thats more than the average two weeks of vacation time (80 hours) taken by many workers during a year. This number has increased by over a minute in 10 years. â€Å"This annual information on commuters and their work trips and other transportation-related data will help local, regional and state agencies maintain, improve, plan and develop the nation’s transportation systems,† said Census Bureau Director Louis Kincannon in a press release. â€Å"American Community Survey data will provide valuable assistance to agencies offering housing, education and other public services as well.† Data has been released through 2013. Compare this with the federal governments estimate of computing the hourly rate based on working 2,080 hours per year. Spending 100 hours commuting adds a significant amount of unpaid time to the work day of the American worker. Map of Commute Times You can find the average commute time for most communities in the U.S. with a map based on the U.S. Census Bureau data provided by WNYC. The color-coded map shades commute times from white for zero minutes to deep purple for more than an hour. If you are deciding on where to move, the map can give you interesting information on your commute times. The data released for 2013 showed that only 4.3 percent of workers had no commute because they worked from home. Meanwhile, 8.1 percent had commutes of 60 minutes or more. A quarter of commuters cross county lines going to and from work. Maryland and New York have the highest average commute times while North Dakota and South Dakota have the lowest. Megacommutes Almost 600,000 American workers have megacommutes of at least 90 minutes and 50 miles. They are more likely to carpool than those with shorter commutes, but that number is still only 39.9 percent. Carpooling in general has declined since the year 2000. However, not all of them are driving as 11.8 percent take rail and 11.2 percent take other forms of public transportation. Long commutes are highest for those in the state of New York at 16.2 percent, Maryland (14.8 percent), and New Jersey (14.6 percent). Three-quarters of megacommuters are male and they are more likely to be older, married, make a higher income, and have a spouse who doesnt work. They often depart for work before 6 a.m. Alternate Commutes Those who take public transit, walk, or bike to work still make up a small part of the total. That overall number hasnt changed much since 2000, although the segments of it have. There has been a slight increase in those who take public transit, with 5.2 percent in 2013 compared with 4.7 percent in 2000. There was a dip in those who walk to work by one-tenth of a percent and growth in those who bike by two-tenths of a percent. Confucius and Plato Essay Editor Ken Wolf, at the beginning of the essay Confucius and Plato: A Few Really Good People, poses the question: â€Å"What is the best way to create a strong society? † (Wolf 25) It was surprising to a novice student of philosophy how similar the ideas of the ancient Chinese sage Confucius and famous Greek philosopher Plato were. Although, Confucius and Plato both made major contributions to the development of society, they showed both similarities and differences in these three subjects: ruling class, education, and faith in humanity. Confucius and Plato both believed virtue and intelligence were key components to creating a strong society. Confucius thought anyone who has been educated had the capability to develop into a ruler. Whereas Plato assumed anyone could be educated, but only a few, those in the ruling class had the ability to reason and thus were qualified to rule. In addition, Plato gave credence to the idea of being born into the ruling class, that the quality to reason was an inherited quality. Confucius and Plato were both strong believers that order was another main factor in a strong society. Although they both had laws to maintain the order, Plato had less faith in people in general to behave in a civilized manner. Both Confucius and Plato were in favor of education and were teachers themselves. Confucius’s followers were the ones who wrote the Analects, which talked about how civilization depends on â€Å"humanity† and â€Å"propriety†. Plato actually wrote The Republic which talked about his ideal â€Å"philosopher-king†. Plato established the Academy, which taught principles of ethics and government, for 900 years. Confucius attempted to teach the ruler to become a better person, but failed. The concepts put forth by Confucius and Plato begin to differ more when faith in humanity comes into play. Confucius and Plato both wanted to think there was good in everyone, but Confucius believed more in a â€Å"†¦society in which human relationships—especially those within the family—were more important than laws. † (Wolf 27) Plato concluded that the people needed to be controlled for there to be order. That control was maintained through the law. They both sought out peace and harmony, although Confucius focused more on the behavior of individuals and Plato was interested in universal truth even though it probably would not be accepted,. Plato felt that if a person tried to bring enlightenment to the masses â€Å"†¦they would probably try to kill to him for telling such tall tales, disrupting their lives and challenging their accustomed beliefs. † (Wolf 31) Even today, most people would agree with Confucius and Plato about the importance of educating people in the development of a strong society. The idea of relationships as the basis of society may be summed up in: â€Å"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. † This Golden Rule seems to be as important to Western society as it was to Chinese society. However, the idea of a better quality of citizen that is better suited to lead society smacks of elitism and would definitely not be accepted in modern democracies. However, that does not mean that the elite educated class from Harvard and Yale has not been overrepresented in American leadership. So perhaps we have a ruling elite, but not as overt as Plato would like. A final thought from the essay would be: a harmonious and orderly existence is important to all societies.

Pro Legalization of Marijuana in the United States Essay -- essays res

With all of the complex issues facing the nation today, it seems as if the legalization of marijuana is being set on the back burner of legislation. There are so many opinions, sides, and overall arguments for and against it that many vote seeking politicians and policy makers have put up a strong resistance to this issue. In this paper I will illustrate the reasons why I think marijuana should indeed be legalized and also the arguments from people who disagree and feel that it should stay an illegal drug. Marijuana has been around for centuries. It comes from the species of plant Cannabis Sativa, and is used for things other that its renowned drug form, such as rope, clothing, medicines, and oils. Other common names for it include weed, pot, grass, reefer, and bud. The drug was actually not outlawed in the United States until the passage of the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937, which made the possession and sale of the plant illegal. A large part of the original fear and misrepresentation was due to ethnic and racial concerns of the southwestern U.S. Large immigrant populations moved into the area and introduced pot as a recreational drug, similar to the use of alcohol or tobacco. The xenophobic reaction caused the initial rejection of the drug and led to its outlaw in 1937. Since that time, government and society’s ignorance have kept the drug illegal. In a nutshell, there are many substantial reasons why the use of marijuana should be made a legal drug. Some of the reasons I will be discussing to support my argument are crime reduction, government benefits, medicinal benefits, lack of evidence to support harm, and constitutional rights. First and foremost is the issue of one’s constitutional right. Even if a drug is shown to be ha... ...here have been no recorded deaths as a result of marijuana use, unlike alcohol or tobacco, and most doctors will agree it is safer to use. Race Relation Act (1975) Amended 2000 This Act states that all children are not discriminated against their race and ensure early years providers work towards the elimination of unlawful discrimination and promote equal opportunities between children of different racial groups. Education Act (1981) This Act became law in 1983 and tried to provide adequate safeguards, rights and duties for all those concerned with the education of children with special educational needs and to ensure these children’s rights to be integrated into the life and work of the community. It also recognised parents’ rights regarding their children’s education. Public Health (Control of Disease) Act (1984) and Health Protection Agency Act (2004) All these legislations are focused on protecting people’s health, covering notification and exclusion periods for certain infectious diseases. Exclusions for children include exclusion from schools, places of entertainment or assembly. Education Reform Act (1988) The National Curriculum was introduced into England, Wales and Northern Ireland as a nationwide curriculum for primary and secondary state schools following the Education Reform Act 1988. Children Act (1989) This is the basis of the current child protection system in England and Wales and was introduced to consolidate and clarify previous legislation. It established the principle that a child’s welfare is paramount in any decisions made about their upbringing. It states that every effort should be made to preserve a child’s home and family links and also introduced the notion of parental responsibility. It details how local authorities and courts should act in order to protect the welfare of children. Education Act (1993) This Act is an education measure with the aim of making important changes to the education system in England and Wales. It has various chapters which give details on the responsibility for education, addressing children with special educational needs, setting out the requirements of school attendance and providing details in regard to admissions and exclusions. It also gives parents the right to ask for their child, which is under 2 years of age, to be formally assessed. Code of Practice for the identification and assessment of Children with Special Educational Needs (1994 revised 2001) This Code of Practice provides practical advice to educational settings, including Early Years settings, on carrying out their statutory duties to identify, assess and make provision for children’s special educational needs. Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulation (RIDDOR) (1995). Major injuries, which include fractures other than to fingers, thumbs or toes, amputation, dislocation, loss of sight (temporary or permanent) * Accidents resulting in over 3 day injure * Notifiable diseases * Dangerous occurrences * Gas incidents Food Safety & General Food Hygiene Regulation (1995) This Act is not currently applicable to registered childminders but acquiring a basic Food Hygiene Certificate is considered good practice. Food should be prepared and provided in a hygienic way. Safety controls are in place, maintained and reviewed. Food safety hazards are identifies by doing risk assessments and implementing appropriate solutions. Family Law Act (1996) This Act sets out guidance on safeguarding and promoting the child’s welfare. Disability Discrimination Act (1995) This Act states that it is illegal to treat disabled person less favourably than a non-disabled person. Settings are required to make reasonable adjustments to prevent disabled people being discriminated. Education Act (1997) This Act incorporates all previous Acts since 1944. It recognise the rights of parents regarding their children’s education and set a time frame on the legal process for identifying and assessing a child’s needs as set out in the Code of Practice. Code of Practice for First Aid (1997) The Code of Practice sets out standard practice and guidance for trained first aiders and gives tailored advice to show different people in industry what they need to do to meet their legal responsibilities for health and safety. Human Rights Act (1998) The Act incorporates the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law. Children are covered by this legislation although not specifically mentioned. Protection of Children Act (1998) The Act states that the Secretary of State shall keep a list of individuals who are considered unsuitable to work with children. Data Protection Act (1998) It relates to information held about an individual. This includes medical records, social services files, facts and opinions about an individual. Anyone processing personal data must comply with the eight principles of good practice. T This Act introduced the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), a statutory framework that sets the standards for learning, development and care of children in the period between child’s birth and their fifth birthday. They all want to expand American influence across the world, but had different ways of going at it. Theodore Roosevelt had US troops advance in foreign countries in make sure that they were stable enough to invest in the country, while William Harvard Taft and the only Democrat, Wilson, felt sending large amounts of American goods to other countries would strengthen American bonds at least from an economic stand point.The Progressive Presidents did have success in their unifying goals of spreading American impact, power, and interests, but eased a lot of resources getting their. All in all the Progressive Presidents did what they wanted to do and set the groundwork for the America we have today. The Progressive Presidents brought changes to American work life and family life that started a new era for society. They gave new life to the US and established ground for growth.The Progressive Presidents acted to change American life by working for women's suffrage, federal regulation, labor and health legislation for women and children, eight hour work days, minimum wages, and social insurance for health, unemployment and old age. The changes affected American life greatly. It aloud for empowerment of women and working strategies that affected working procedures and the way companies now had to treat its workers. The impacts of these policies are still in affect today.We still have the policies like the Clayton Act that exempted unions from anti-trust laws and made it easier for them to strike, The Keating-Owen Act that out laded child labor in manufacturing, and Adamson Act that mandated an eight hour work day for railroad workers. In conclusion the Progressive Presidents instituted laws and established acts hat greatly affected American life and business. The changes that were made by the Progressive Presidents greatly improved the American business world and made it safer, morally better, and more meaningful for all.Teddy Roosevelt decisions to run for a third term after Taft had a lot to do with the way Taft acted as President. Though we do not follow his example as we should there is a lot to be learn from what he has done. The Progressive Presidents had the common element of wanting to expand American influence and marked the foregrounds of the strong nation we have today.Roosevelt knew that the building Panama Canal would be the perfect place to spread American influence and international prominence because ships from all over the world would have to pass through the canal and deal with the US. Usually leadership styles are analyzed on the basis of two parameters, namely goal orientation and behavioral orientation. Based on these two parameters, there are four types of leadership styles such as autocratic, participative, country club and impoverished leadership (Buelens, Sinding, Waldstrom, Krietner, & Kinicki, 2011). In case of autocratic leadership, there is a high amount of value for goal but a low level of value for the behavior of people. Such leaders are goal oriented, but there is very little care for employee satisfaction. In case of impoverished leadership, there is low goal and behavior orientation. Such leaders show a very low level of commitment towards the employees and the organizational objective. In case of country club leadership, there is low goal orientation but a high level of behavi or orientation. Here the leaders show a high level of care towards the employees and ask the employees to maintain discipline and encourage them to accomplish goals rather than actively participating in the accomplishment of goals. The last but not the least, there also exists participative or team leadership. In case of team leadership, the leaders show a high level of care for the employees. But the leaders also expect full commitment on the part of the management and team towards the organizational goal achievement.... In case of country club leadership, there is low goal orientation but a high level of behavior orientation. Here the leaders show a high level of care towards the employees and ask the employees to maintain discipline and encourage them to accomplish goals rather than actively participating in the accomplishment of goals. The last but not the least, there also exists participative or team leadership. In case of team leadership, the leaders show a high level of care for the employees. But the leaders also expect full commitment on the part of the management and team towards the organizational goal achievement. Also, the leaders actively participate in the goal accomplishment activities and believe in leading by example (Buchanan & Huczynski, 2010). Based on the above discussion, it can be easily understood that the leadership style followed by Google and Page is team or participative leadership. Google has a relatively informal organizational structure and it encourages the employees and managers to take their own initiatives. In such a way the leadership team of Google including Page encourages team participation and a self-driven attitude where the employees can take major decisions without consulting the seniors. Such leadership style coupled with relatively informal organizational culture has probably helped Google to reach the pinnacle of success. However, it is to be added here that as an organizational objective, Google shows respect and care for the employees and their personal lives.
